A Beautiful Breeze for your Empathy

She rubbed her palms together as if trying to keep warm. Yet that afternoon, Mombasa was characteristically hot and humid. But her soul was shivering. Her spirit was crawling on the wooden floor of the airbnb studio apartment she had rented in the upmarket Nyali estate. Her iPhone12 was lying face down on her bed. It buzzed. It was her best friend Nimo. She just let it ring, wishing that she could share with Nimo what had just happened. But she couldn’t. Nimo wouldn't understand her pain. Nimo would just tell her to be strong and to learn from her mistake. But her soul wouldn’t shiver like hers.

Empathy bends low and steps into someone else’s shoes of pain. Empathy identifies with the anguish of the one suffering. And in so doing, it lessens that suffering.

Empathy grants a listening ear, listens with the heart, hears the unspoken pain, shudders at the unseen anguish, abstains from judging and lends a helping hand that uplifts.

While empathy steps into the shoes of someone, sympathy feels sorry for someone but doesn’t get close enough to step into those shoes. Choose empathy. Learn empathy. Embrace empathy because those nearest and dearest to you need it more than you know.

Kindness is an ointment that nourishes sore spirits. Just be kind. Read more here.
